REGIONAL PARK

PARCO DEL MONTE CUCCO

A mountain system of the Apennines on which the Monte Cucco (mt. 1566) raises, whose Umbrian side descends till the Flaminia road, of which some important ruins of the Roman period are conserved.
It's the "womb of the Apennines" with a complex hypogean system, phenomena of Karstism, subterranean waters whose spring points nourish the civic aqueducts, the mineral springs, and mix in the River Sentino. Abundant are the fossils, the woods are intact. It's the Park of the sports in the mountain: gliding, speleology, cross-country ski.

The visiting routes
It's possible to admire and visit all the most important historical centers by driving a car in Via Flaminia and through the internal roads that leave Scheggia one can enter into the extraordinary itinerary to the Abbeys. Other internal roads lead to the Val di Rancozone and to the tourist installations built in the 1960's. It's possible to visit the mountain zones with the "Sentiero Italia " path and Club Alpino Italiano paths. Horses and mountain bikes can be ridden here. Several national agonistic races are also held here.

PARCO DEL MONTE SUBASIO

The "mystic" surrounding in the middle of the Valley Umbra, seat of the Franciscan movement.
The Mount divides and links at the same time, as a natural picture, the historic centres of Assisi, Spello and Nocera Umbra as an unifying element of the landscape. History, Nature and Culture merge in the Subasio and Assisi, whose the historic nucleus is in the Park, is the natural door.

The visits' courses
For the form and the isolated position of the Subasio Mount, the main roads touch its borders with the SS. 75 that links Foligno and Perugia on the west ,with the SS. 444 Assisana that reaches Gualdo Tadino on the north and, not far on the south-eastern side, the SS.3-Flaminia passes. The roads that go to the Park are mainly represented by the links among the historic centres of Assisi, Spello, Nocera and Valtopina with the minor centres placed on the relief. These roads have principally a touristic function as that one that links the centre of the town of Assisi - Porta Cappuccini (Door Cappuccini)- to the Prisons' Hermitage, to the Abbey of San Benedetto and the top of the mount.
Always in Assisi,and exactly from the Perlici door, through the SS. 444 firstly and then turning on the right, there is Cą Piombino seat of the Park, and continuing it's possible to climb till the coast of Trex, and to reach Spello touching firstly the minor historic centres of Armenzano, San Giovanni and Collepino.
It's very important the height road that links Assisi to Spello and that reminds the ancient cartway track . This road that has got some particular characteristics of panoramic view, it's followed by the tourists who want to gain the top grasses of the Stazzi on the side of Assisi and the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Spella on the side of Spello.
Always along this course there are the Mortaro Grande and the Mortaro Piccolo, some dry dolines placed near the top of the mount, used, in the passed centuries, to produce the ice by pressing the snow and for maintaining it till summary.
Next to these main roads, that you can run along by car, with the limits imposed to a height road by the needs of surrounding protection, some paths branch off and they're organised to be walked on foot or on horsetrack, starting above all from the Villages of the Coast of Trex, Armenzano, San Giovanni and Collepino, and permitting to gain also the grasses on the top of the relief.

PARCO DEL LAGO TRASIMENO

A lake and hilly picture with some anthropic activities that are its characteristics and at the same time an irreplaceable halting-place for the migratory avifauna and also vital place of some important fishing species. It's the unmistakable historic landscape reproduced in the pictures of several chef painters of the Fifteenth century. Its weakly idrologic and biologic balance required all the time the safeguard intervention of the man, necessary, today yet, for saving the resources.

The visit courses
The provincial and main roads surround completely the Park often corresponding with its borders, permitting a pleasant and easy tour also thanks to the numerous accesses to the town centres, to the port installations, to the banks of the lake.
The lake, the sun, the main centres can be visited by the boats of the public shipping agency with departures from Sant'Arcangelo, on the southern bank, from San Feliciano and Passignano, on the eastern bank, from Castiglione del Lago on the western one and finally from Tuoro on the northern bank.
From the Park another roads and paths way permits by car, or on horseback or by mountain bike or by foot, to gain the hills near the Trasimeno where some historic centres often rise.
Among these ones we we can mark out Panicale, placed on a rock that dominates the rich plain of Tresa and from which you can enjoy a wonderful view on the lake, that forms the division and the entry to the valley of the Nestore and to the basin of the Tevere.

PARCO FLUVIALE DEL NERA

It's the Park of the waters: The Velino and Nero River,the lake, the Marmore Falls, the big hydroelectric centrals for the Terni steel-plants. Along the fluvial valleys the small fort centers: Arrone,Ferentillo, Montefranco, the monasteries and the guard towers. Uphill over the "Salto del Cieco" flies the golden eagle. it's the Park of Water sports: boat racing,rafting and canoeing. It's the Park of free climbing: the natural rocks, the great artificial gymnasium.

The visiting routes
The visiting routes are substantially oriented on the water itineraries in which is the fundamental support of the SS Valnerina that runs parallel to the Nera river.
Interesting visiting itineraries leave from Arrone until Polino and towards Mount La Pelosa, from Montefranco,towards Mount Moro, from Ferentillo towards Castellonalto Terria and Belredele. The Nero river is the fundamental entrance door to the whole Valnerina, to Casfia to Norcia and most of all to the Monti Sibillini National Park.

PARCO FLUVIALE DEL TEVERE

The river is great just like its history.In the medium part the colle(hill of Todi. Following: the gorge of Forello, the Orvietane rocks of Prodo and Titignano. then the Lakes of Corbara and Alviano,the Lake of Alviano is the covering locality for the migratory and permanent nesting ornithologic fauna.Around the large oak woods and near the river archeologic Umbria, Etruscans,Roman evidences; castles or their ruins belonged to the leaders.

The visiting routes
The road system enables to follow the Tevere flow from Montemolino until Madonna del Porto and then from Ponte Rio, with the SS on the right bank and with the Commune one on the left one.
From Ponte Rio numerous few distance routes lead to Todi's center, to Pontecuti, Medieval Todi fortified outpost, the left bank route is interrupted at the "Scogliera delle lavandare" while the right bank route follows and crosses the Tevere river, penetrates in the Forello gorge, goes to the Pasquarella Church, goes along the lake of Corbara overhung by the villages Acqualoreto, Scoppieto, Civitella and reach the historical centers of Baschi, Montecchio,Guardea, the entrance to the Oasis and Alviano overhung by Bartolomeo's Castle, a mercenary captain.

From Pontecuti towards Todi and Orvieto,begins a route that was the sheep transhumance route towards the Maremma and a dense smaller road net makes it possible to reach Torreluca, the Montemarte ruins, the Titignano and Corbara Castles.

PARCO DI COLFIORITO

An immense plateau with exceptional values found in the middle: a marsh that gathers rare flower and vegetation kinds and guests aquatic birds, gasteropods and amphibians. Mount Orve and its prehistoric castle; archeological findings of the Roman city of Plestia. A Karst plain landscape and hills, unchanged the agriculture-pasture civilization history of the Appennines.

The visiting routes
Going along the SS 77 by car one reaches the town of Colfiorito and from here one can reach by crossing the commune road for Forcatura the Colfiorito marsh. One can visit it going along the various paths following the perimeter that brings to an observatory for bird-watching , also built for the handicapped.
Near a demolished mill, there is the most substantial of the sink holes where the marsh water flows, denominated by "Molinaccio".
A Marsh visit is now possible and allows the access to some banks and inside the marsh water, protecting the integrity of the more favourable parts of the remaining avifauna.
Always from "Molinaccio", opposite the gravel road,one can reach the top of Monte Orve where one can see the total area of the Marsh of Piano of Colfiorito and Marsh of Annifo.
Passing the town of Colfiorito and going towards Pievetorina and Visso,one can reach the Sanctuary of Santa Maria of Plestia and the excavations of Colfiorito.
The Sanctuary is reached by pilgrims each year; is located in the surroundings where monthly fairs are held from May -September. A particular interest is the XI century crypt subdivided in five small naves of three order columns and surmounted by capitals that are usually decorated with geometric designs.
In the archeological excavations it was found late-republican building ruins,forum ruins, temple ruins and other buildings with mosaic pavements and arcade area; under the Roman buildings there are ruins of an Iron Era village. (IX/VIII B.C.)
Between the base of Mont Orve and the recent cemetery of Colfiorito there have been found 250 tombs and burial ceramic trousseaus,iron arms and ornamental objects, the oldest objects go back since the X century B.C.

NATIONAL PARK

PARCO NAZIONALE DEI MONTI SIBILLINI

A mountain chain that rises in the heart of Italy and reaches M. Vettore (2,476 mts.). A territory where the magic of the local nature, history and and culture have contributed in defining a unique and unrepeatable reality. Here in the mythical Sibillan kingdom the Monti Sibillini National Park was born in 1993 (with over 70,000 hts.), with the aim to save the environment. Also encourages the social economic development and favours the enjoyment of persons of different categories creating a "Park for everybody". The wolf, golden eagle, peregrine and numerous endemic species are obvious signs of a different and biologic richness that along with the charm of the abbeys and Medieval historical centers, spread in a crown form to the slabs of the mountains.They have determined an old and suggestive world where time has stopped to honour a reality of extraordinary beauty.

ITINERARIES:

The trip paths like a web cross these mountains, guarantee from spring to fall ,the discovery in an encouraging manner the natural, historical and cultural environment.In the winter when the highest peaks are full of snow, represent a new occasion to go skiing through the woods and valleys wrapped by an absolute silence. Horse back riding, mountain bike riding, hang gliders flights, or with the paraglider, rock and glacier climbing are other entertainments that the "Case del Parco" offers the visitor. They also offer interesting historical and natural guided trips for the discovery of the essence of this rare and precious territory.
